Strengthening Fraud Control in Nigeria
The Quality Improvement Institute of Nigeria (QIIN) was ably represented by Mr. Athanasius Abraham Manji, who attended on behalf of Dr. Fatimah (Oyenike) OJO, both QIIN Faculty, at the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and British Standards Institution (BSI) joint promotional event held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja from 29th–30th September 2025.
The high-level gathering marked the launch of ISO 37003:2025 – Fraud Control Management System, a new global framework designed to prevent, detect, and respond to fraud across organizations and institutions.
Fraud continues to undermine national development, organizational trust, and sustainability. The communique issued at the event emphasized that while many organizations have fraud control policies, these are often inconsistent, fragmented, and reactive. ISO 37003:2025 offers a harmonized, proactive, and globally benchmarked approach that integrates fraud risk management into governance structures and corporate culture.
Key Outcomes from the Event
Adoption of ISO 37003: Organizations are urged to adopt the standard as a unified framework for fraud prevention and detection.
Leadership Commitment: Strong political and executive backing, including a proposed Executive Order, is considered essential for institutionalization.
Integration with Anti-Bribery Standards: Businesses are encouraged to adopt ISO 37003 alongside ISO 37001 to reinforce corporate governance and investor confidence.
Capacity Building: SON will lead the rollout of national training curricula, sector hubs, and certified experts to drive adoption.
Advocacy and Public Awareness: NGOs and civil society are encouraged to champion adoption and foster public trust through advocacy and awareness campaigns.
QIIN’s Perspective
For QIIN, participation in this milestone event reinforces its commitment to advancing quality and integrity frameworks in Nigeria. Embedding ISO 37003 into governance and business systems will strengthen accountability, enhance public trust, and safeguard sustainable development.
QIIN will support the capacity building effort for this ISO Standard
As the communiqué concluded, the launch of ISO 37003:2025 marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s anti-fraud journey, one that calls for collective action, leadership, and continuous capacity building. QIIN is proud to be part of this important national conversation and remains committed to supporting its understanding and effective implementation.
