A groundbreaking moment for QIIN
September 8–12, 2025, marked a groundbreaking moment for quality capacity development in Nigeria’s laboratory sector, as the Quality Improvement Institute of Nigeria (QIIN) successfully delivered its first-ever Combo Certification Course; a dynamic, fully online training program that integrated ISO 15189:2022 (Medical Laboratories) and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (Testing & Calibration Laboratories) into one power-packed learning experience.
A Vision Realised: Dual Competence for a Quality-Driven Future
The Combo Certification Course was born out of QIIN’s commitment to bridge critical knowledge gaps in medical, testing and calibration laboratories. With ISO 15189:2022 now closely linked to ISO 17025:2017 and using it as a standard requirement, QIIN created a course that helps professionals gain the dual skills that regulators, accreditors, and employers are increasingly looking for.
Participants not only explored the principles of medical laboratory quality systems but also focused on the technical elements of calibration, measurement traceability, and method validation, enriched by insights from ISO/TS 20914:2019 on estimating measurement uncertainty.
100% Online, 100% Engaging
Held via Google Meet, the 5-day training ran daily from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and featured:
- 3 days dedicated to ISO 15189 and related standards.
- Two days focused on ISO 17025
Each session was filled with interactive learning, including daily Q&A, live faculty engagement, and a robust certification assessment process involving quizzes, assignments, tests, and final exams. Only participants who met the 70% pass mark are expected to be enlisted in the planned Assessors Program, ensuring the integrity and value of the programme.
A Diverse Class, A Richer Conversation
A total of 28 participants joined the programme, representing a healthy cross-section of the health and laboratory ecosystem:
- Medical Laboratory Scientists
- Science Laboratory Technologists
- Biomedical Engineers
This variety improved the learning experience and strengthened QIIN’s awareness of how important and widespread this training is for different people involved in the healthcare laboratory value chain.
Meet the Faculty That Made It Happen
Six QIIN faculty members, each bringing deep expertise in quality management systems, facilitated the training.
- Dr Ojo – UNIDO-trained ISO 17025 Assessor
- Dr. Justin – Accomplished ISO 17025 Assessor
- Emb. Inikpi, Sct. Stanley, Sct. Horsfall, and Sct. Eze—experienced biomedical engineers and QMS trainers.
- Dr Hati – President/CEO of QIIN and moderator of the entire course
Their combined delivery was practical, standards-driven, and tailored to real-world challenges faced by labs in Nigeria.
Practical Tools for Real Implementation
Participants didn’t just walk away with certificates—they gained:
- A comprehensive working quality manual was developed by QIIN based on actual ISO 15189 accreditation projects.
- Ready-to-use templates and tools sourced from partner medical laboratories.
These resources will empower attendees to implement standards, not just understand them.
Special Thanks and Acknowledgements
QIIN extends sincere gratitude to the following partners and supporters:
- Cademy Ltd.: For their continued sponsorship support, they are helping us scale quality training access across Nigeria.
- QIIN Faculty members: For their sacrificial commitment to quality education.
