QoLII Takes Health Education, Screening and Community Research to Damangaza
Healthier families build stronger communities
Over 100 community members participate as QIIN and healthcare partners launch a new chapter in community-centred quality-of-life improvement.
What does improving quality of life really mean to a family? Is it access to healthcare, better nutrition, early detection of illness, or simply having someone listen to their everyday challenges?
These questions came alive on Saturday, 7 November 2026, as the Quality Improvement Institute of Nigeria (QIIN), through its Quality of Life Improvement Initiative (QoLII), successfully held the maiden edition of its Community Needs Assessment and Wellness Day at the Primary Health Care Centre, Damangaza Community, Lokogoma, Abuja.
Organised as part of QIIN Quality Week 2026, the outreach brought together over 100 community members, healthcare professionals, volunteers and local leaders under the theme “Healthy Families Stand Together: Reproductive Health, Hygiene, Nutrition and Screening for All.”
Listening Before Acting: A Community-Centred Approach
Unlike conventional health outreaches that focus primarily on screening and treatment, the Damangaza programme combined community research, health education and preventive wellness services.
Participants completed baseline questionnaires designed to identify their health concerns, everyday challenges and priorities for improving wellbeing. More than 100 people participated in this needs assessment, while a proportion also benefited from the available screening services.
The engagement created opportunities for residents to express their concerns, ask questions and interact directly with healthcare professionals.
For QoLII, this was particularly important. Meaningful improvement begins with understanding what people need, rather than assuming what they need.
The findings will provide a foundation for identifying community health priorities and exploring appropriate follow-up interventions with relevant stakeholders.
Bringing Healthcare Knowledge Closer to Families
The programme featured interactive health education sessions covering reproductive health, personal and environmental hygiene, nutrition and the importance of early detection of health conditions.
Healthcare professionals from HENKS Medicals Limited, MedicAid Diagnostic and Radiological Services, and other participating organisations supported the activities through health talks, professional guidance and basic wellness assessments.
A nutritionist from Trust Charitos Hospital provided practical education on healthy eating and the importance of nutrition in maintaining family wellbeing.
Medical laboratory scientists also supported basic screening activities, including blood sugar checks, while other healthcare personnel conducted blood pressure assessments and provided general wellness guidance.
These services offered participants an opportunity to better understand their health status and the importance of seeking timely medical attention when necessary.
The atmosphere was lively and engaging, with conversations, interactive activities and community participation reinforcing the message that health education becomes more meaningful when people can relate it to their daily lives.
A Community and Its Partners Working Together
One of the encouraging aspects of the outreach was the involvement of the traditional leadership of Damangaza, whose community chief joined the programme, alongside local primary healthcare workers who supported the activities.
Their participation reflected the importance of community ownership in promoting sustainable health improvement.
QIIN sincerely appreciates HENKS Medicals Limited, MedicAid Diagnostic and Radiological Services, Trust Charitos Hospital, the participating healthcare professionals, community leaders and volunteers whose contributions made the outreach possible.
Special appreciation also goes to the QoLII coordination team, whose commitment brought together the research, educational and wellness components of the programme.
Beyond Damangaza: A Growing Vision for QoLII
For QIIN, the success of the Damangaza outreach represents more than a single day’s achievement. It marks an important step in translating the Institute’s research and stakeholder engagement mandate into practical community impact.
The Community Needs Assessment and Wellness Day is one component of the broader Quality of Life Improvement Initiative, which seeks to generate evidence, promote public awareness and support meaningful improvements in people’s everyday lives.
Other QoLII programmes are also taking shape, including Quality for Teens, a school-focused initiative recently introduced at Lakeland School, with plans to extend its reach to more educational institutions.
Together, these activities reflect QIIN’s commitment to reaching people where they live, learn and work.
The Beginning of a Bigger Story
As the activities concluded in Damangaza, one message stood out: improving quality of life is not simply about delivering services. It is about listening to people, understanding their challenges, sharing knowledge and working together towards practical solutions.
The questionnaires collected, conversations held and wellness services provided have laid the groundwork for further engagement.
QIIN looks forward to reviewing the research findings and working with relevant partners to identify opportunities for continued improvement.
Because healthier families build stronger communities, and sustainable improvement begins when we listen, learn and act together.
